David, Christine Hinton, and Debbie Donovan had set up housekeeping in Novato, California, in Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge. Christine Hinton had been the original organizer of the Byrds Fan Club, when they were first getting started. Barely of age, she and her nubile friends took it on themselves to provide pleasure and support for their idols. There were no apparent limits to the sex enjoyed, the drugs consumed, and the hedonistic lifestyle that has been memorialized in every book and movie of the time. Christine started as one of many, became first among equals, and eventually was the significant other in David’s life, although she put up with his practice of enjoying multiple partners, as well as his ongoing relationships with other women.
